The Yaz Resource Center, a patient advocacy group, is alerting women who have suffered side effects after taking the birth control drugs Yaz and Yasmin that Bayer Pharmaceuticals is currently settling claims. In 2009, The British Medical Journal published studies from Denmark and the Netherlands linking the chemicals in Yaz to blood clots. In October, 2011 the FDA also released data of more than 825,000 women taking oral contraceptives which showed drugs like Yaz could cause up to a 74% increased risk of developing blood clots.

As news spread, thousands of women who had taken Yaz filed injury claims for blood clot-related conditions such as stroke, Deep Vein Thrombosis, and Pulmonary Embolism.

According to a federal Multi-District Litigation court established in Illinois to handle Yaz cases, nearly 12,000 people have filed a Yaz lawsuit. The formal case style is Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 2100, S.Dist Ill).

Bloomberg News originally reported on April 13, 2012 that Bayer would settle 500 of the lawsuits at approximately $ 220,000 per case. The company has now reported in its Stockholders? Newsletter for the first quarter that it has paid $ 142 million in settlements, at an average of about $ 218,000 a case.

With news of settlements growing, the Yaz Resource Center has received calls from patients who have been promised quick settlements and lawsuit proceeds within days.

The Yaz Resource Center cautions patients that while Yaz settlements are available, only certain law firms will be able to secure settlement of their cases. It typically takes months for medical records and documents to be approved before proceeds are received. Anyone who is told otherwise should be suspicious.

According to CBS News, there’s a new trend: couples are putting together cohabitation agreements when they move in together as a type of pre-nup precursor (http://cbsloc.al/JJLAeu). These agreements, or commitment contracts, address typical issues like how to split assets should the couple break up, but they can also set day-to-day ground rules like who shops for the groceries, how the rent is divided, and so forth.

Sex and relationship therapist Dr. Bonnie Eaker Weil agrees with the article: it’s easy for couples to just “ease” into living together without laying down any ground rules. The Cohab, as it’s being called, addresses potential problems that can arise. “Cohabitation isn’t as official or as legally binding as a marriage,” says Dr. Bonnie, “but people still end up pooling their resources, financially supporting each other, sacrificing for one another just like they would in a marriage. So it’s wise for couples to protect themselves even if there’s not a ring on their fingers.” She talks about this type of agreement, as well as a traditional pre-nup in her book Financial Infidelity: The Number One Relationship Wrecker.

Once someone leaves their toothbrush at the other person’s house, it’s a sign that the couple is unofficially living together says Dr. Bonnie. And at that point, the couple needs a commitment contract! Dr. Bonnie relays a similar story from her own experience in her book Make Up Don’t Break Up: Before they were married, Dr. Bonnie’s husband wouldn’t leave a toothbrush at her house, and kept his clothes in the trunk of his car because he was too afraid to contemplate the idea of living together, but still spent the night every night. “I assumed we were living together,” she says, “but when I told that to a friend he turned ghostly white!” This underscores the importance of a commitment contract so there’s no ambiguity.

It can also be a good step for people who are commitment-phobic. It’s less of a commitment than marriage but a cohab is still a document saying that things are changing. “It lays out the ground rules,” explains Dr. Bonnie, “so that people are on the same page and have a distinct idea of what the expectations are. There are no assumptions.

Some of Dr. Bonnie’s patients think this is unromantic, but a commitment contract – signing on the dotted line – to live together is especially necessary so each person is taken care of if the other partner dies. It’s about taking responsibility to address issues that people might not think of if they’re not married. It also strengthens a couple’s bond, especially with people who are “gun-shy,” so they can handle expectations for what happens if it works and if it doesn’t.

A cohab can be perfect for heterosexual or gay couples who are planning on living with each other long-term. Dr. Bonnie suggests each person come to the table prepared to discuss what the living arrangement looks like to them, and to also be flexible. “It’s an especially good time for couples who maybe did ease into their living arrangement to delineate what’s working and what isn’t, and to make their decision more official.” For couples that have made the decision to live together but aren’t yet, Dr. Bonnie says the cohab is important for them too.

And each person should come with their own lawyer, she advises.

Drug injury lawyer Hansen Dirani warned about the potentially dangerous side effects of Propecia, a drug used for treating male baldness.

According to the New York Daily News, Propecia may have more possible sexual side effects than previously thought.

?Propecia has been linked to permanent sexual side effects as well as anxiety and insomnia,? Dirani said. ?In April, the Food and Drug Administration announced changes to the label for Propecia to warn consumers of potential sexual side effects that can last even after patients stop taking the drug.?

Merck & Co. makes Propecia and Proscar, which is used to treat enlarged prostates. Both drugs contain finasteride. According to the FDA, the new Propecia label will warn consumers of ?libido disorders, ejaculation disorders, and orgasm disorders that continued after discontinuation of the drug.?

The Proscar label will warn users about decreased libido that that continued after discontinuation of the drug,? according to the FDA.

Dirani said attorneys currently are reviewing potential Propecia class action lawsuits. ?A recent study found that up to 15 percent of men who used Propecia experienced sexual dysfunction,? Dirani said.

The FDA reported that the label changes are happening after several patients reported additional adverse side effects that were not seen at the time the drugs were approved.

Dirani noted that people who have experienced adverse side effects of Propecia should contact a dangerous drug lawyer to learn about their rights.
